Alloy C276 Welded Pipe in PTA (Purified Terephthalic Acid) Process Plants

Alloy C276 welded pipe 8” NB Sched 40 and the pipe fittings were specified for pipe spools used in the manufacture of PTA. Alloy C276 pipework is commonly specified in the ICI, BP, Hitachi and DuPont licensed PTA processes.

PTA or purified terephthalic acid is a raw material used in the manufacture of high-performance multi-purpose plastics such as polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT), a new bioplastic that has been garnering attention in recent years. PTA is made from a reaction between the secondary petroleum product, paraxylene (PX), and acetic acid. Firstly PX is oxidized to form crude terephthalic acid (CTA), and then CTA is consequently refined to PTA.

NeoNickel’s C276 is a solid-solution strengthened, nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy with a small amount of tungsten, which exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in an assortment of harsh environments including strong oxidizers such as ferric and cupric ions, hot contaminated media (organic and inorganic) formic acid and acetic acid. Moreover, alloy C276 has an excellent resistance to localised corrosion (pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking) in both oxidizing and reducing environments. It also demonstrates outstanding corrosion resistance in brine and sea water applications. Hence, C276 is generally selected as it allows flexibility in design, after service and commissioning of plants in the refinery, petrochemical and chemical process industries.
