Alloy 400 & K500 – Alloys in the Spotlight
Both Alloy 400 (Monel® 400) and Alloy K500 (Monel® K) deliver excellent corrosion resistance in environments containing:
- Fluorine
- Hydrofluoric Acid
- Hydrogen Fluoride
- Sulphuric Acid
- Seawater
Although both alloys deliver similar corrosion resistance, Alloy K500 was developed for its greater strength and hardness. However this introduced a greater tendency for stress corrosion cracking in some environments.
The addition of Titanium and Aluminium to Alloy 400 makes age hardening possible.
Key Features of Alloy 400:
- Excellent resistance to neutral and alkaline salt.
- Resistant to caustic alkalis.
- Resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- Good mechanical properties from sub-zero temperatures up to 548.88°C
Alloy 400 is also known as UNS N04400, MONEL® 400 and Nickel Alloy 400 (MONEL® 400 is a registered trade name of Special Metals including the former Inco Alloys International Inc.)
Common applications of Alloy 400:
- Pumps & Valves
- Chemical Process
- Marine Engineering
- Heat Exchangers
Technical Recourses: Burst Pressure Tables – Alloy 400 Seamless Tube
Key Features of Alloy K500:
- Excellent mechanical properties from sub-zero temperatures up to about 480°C
- Outstanding corrosion resistance in a variety of environments
- Resistance to hydrogen sulfide makes Alloy K500 useful in sour-gas environments
Common applications of Alloy K500:
- Pumps & Valves
- Impellors
- Scrapers
- Drill Collars
Alloy K50 is also known as Monel® K, UNS N05500, W.Nr. 2.4375 and Nickel Alloy K500.
