What is Duplex Stainless Steel?

Duplex Stainless Steel is a highly specialised material. It is named a “duplex alloy” because its microstructure combines two different types of grain structures – austenitic and ferritic.

It typically contains higher levels of chromium and molybdenum compared to standard stainless steel, along with additions of nitrogen. This special blend not only enhances its strength but also significantly improves its resistance to corrosion.

Duplex Stainless Steels Grades

Renowned for their remarkable combination of strength and corrosion resistance, with various grades offering distinct properties for specific applications.

Lean Duplex: This grade is known for its lower alloy content compared to other duplex steels. While it offers less corrosion resistance than the higher grades, it compensates with higher strength than standard austenitic stainless steels and excellent cost efficiency.

Standard Duplex: Representing a balance between cost, strength, and corrosion resistance, standard duplex stainless steels are well-suited for a variety of applications. They contain more alloying elements than lean duplex, providing better resistance to corrosion and greater strength.

Super Duplex: With even more chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen than standard duplex, this grade offers excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, making it suitable for highly corrosive environments, such as those encountered in the marine and chemical processing industries.

Hyper Duplex (PREN Grade): The most advanced among the duplex grades, hyper duplex, has the highest levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, leading to the highest pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN). This grade is designed for extreme environments where exceptional strength and outstanding corrosion resistance are essential, such as in deep-sea and highly acidic applications.
